I had a pretty unpleasant movie going experience today when I went to the IMAX version of Dark Knight (Batman).
First I have to clarify that the problem is NOT on the movie itself. The movie was very well made. I can't say that this is one of the top 10 movie of all time, but at least it's a good movie. The pacing was great, so the editor did a great job. The story was very well written. The performance Joker was simply awesome. Totally Oscar worthy. Cinematography was great. Action sequence were very well designed. Beware that the plot, especially Joker's plans were all very twisted and horrible. I strong recommend NOT letting you kid under 10 see it. They will have nightmare for weeks.
Now here comes the things I don't like. I don't like those cliche one liner. I know American movie viewer like that sort of stuff, but they made the movie less serious than it should be.
But my biggest complain is the IMAX theater I went to. It's probably because I sit too close to the screen. I felt sorry that I didn't follow my own advice getting there an hour in advance. In fact, I should be there 1.5 hours in advance in order to line up and get a better seats. So it turns out that I had to sit at the middle to front row. The result: I saw all the artifacts of the analog print of the movie. Too much motion on too huge a screen made me almost seasick. But even if I get to sit at the last 2 rows, I don't think I will enjoy the experience. The print quality is just not good.
So I will give digital projection a chance to prove it's worthiness to me. But if it failed, then I will never go to therater again, and instead wait for Blueray release and then rent it. So long for horrible picture quality.
